Cutting edge graphics software meets free culture Developers and users of Free, Libre and Open Source graphics software have met May 27-30 in Brussels at the fifth annual Libre Graphics Meeting (LGM). The meeting space was truly unique -- an historic piano factory, freshly renovated into a lively exhibition and workspace. LGM 2010 gave software developers, artists, designers and other graphics professionals the opportunity to collaborate and learn from each other.

MAPit (workshop: hands on) at i-beta festival, Heerlen (11.06)

Social Spaces will be present at the i-beta festival in Heerlen at the 11th of June to present MAPit, a mapping toolkit to facilitate cross-disciplinary dialogues and creation processes. The mapping kit answers to the fact that people from different profiles, backgrounds and expertise do not necessarily share the same ‘language’.

Exhibition chmod +x opened

Yesterday the exhibition chmod +x opened in Sign gallery, Groningen. The works exhibited are "love2" by Wayne Clements, "island2" by Martin Howse, "Microcodes" by Pall Thayer and "Class Library" by Graham Harwood. The exhibition presents works that use the computer as a space for social revolution, as location, an ungraspable island that slowly transmits itself to other computers, as actor, mimicking other machines. Executable language, thoughts, ideas and actions translated into code that can be interpreted and executed by a machine.

Revelation Space

With an opening party tomorrow is starting the Revelation Space in Den Haag, a new dutch hackerspace gathering quite some crafty folks. It seems that those hackers have a good touch for interior design as well! Among those are the discoverers of the cheap and famous lackrack: a storage solution for your rack units (up to 9 contained in a 5 EUR worth furniture), and they are now really proud to present the whole space to newcomers.

Context Free Art goes 3d

Context Free fostered interesting developments in graphic design for the past few years, providing well documented free software for language-based image synthesis. In fact the CFDG language made it possible to generate detailed images, including up to millions of shapes, from a written instruction grammar. All this just using bi-dimensional graphics, so far.
